Why Survive school and life when you can Thrive in school and life?

Many elementary, middle, high school and college students are only surviving school. They are getting through the day often feeling stress and pressure because of a disability or because of an inability to stay organized or because it is just too hard. Living under this constant pressure and anxiety starts to take its toll on self-confidence and self-worth.  Feelings of low self-confidence and self-worth can lead to diminishing grades and social interactions. 

When we think of social skills and abilities, we think of the ability to make friends but it’s so much more than that.  As a parent, we all want our children to be happy, do well in school and have friends. It’s a valid feeling but social interactions encompass more than that. In the classroom, being comfortable approaching the teacher to ask for help, being able to respond to questions during large and small group learning and being able to participate as part of a group for collaborative assignments are also parts of social interaction abilities.  

As parents, we also experience stress and anxiety when our children are struggling. Parents want to help, advise and support their children.  But how?  What is the balance? Parents want to help with homework, email teachers (or administrators) and, sometimes, take on the academic burden to alleviate some of the stress our children face causing stress for the parent as well.  

At Thrive Academic Coaching, we will meet virtually or in the home, when possible, and talk about where the breakdown is in the classroom and, if necessary, socially from the student and the parent’s perspective. Together, we set long term goals as well as small attainable goals. We create a success plan with tasks and missions for students and parents that lead to success in school and at home.
